The Sound of Music is a wonderfully romantic story and one of my favorite movies because I just love the scenery and the music. I also appreciate that there is some truth behind the story. The Von Trapp family really did leave Austria and eventually ended up settling in Stowe, Vermont. And - the Von Trapp family did perform together as a family. The real Maria Von Trapp is actually in the movie. She appears during the "Confidence" number. She is the older of the two peasant women in the background just as Julie Andrews goes through the brick arch.
As a rule…I usually don’t care for musicals, but this movie has so many wonderful songs. Edelweiss would be at the top of the list for me. Did you know that Christopher Plummer hated the song, and called it schmaltzy. Boy! He sure fooled me. I guess that’s what makes a good actor. It’s also not an Austrian folk song. It was written by Oscar Hammerstein specifically for the movie and was the last song he wrote before his death in 1960.
